Allen-Bradley 1797-OB4D FLEX Ex Intrinsically Safe Digital Output Module

The Allen-Bradley 1797-OB4D is a 4-channel, intrinsically safe digital output module for the FLEX Ex I/O system. Featuring built-in diagnostics for open-circuit and short-circuit detection, it provides a safe and efficient way to control actuators in Class I Division 1 hazardous environments without external barriers.

Product Description

The Allen-Bradley 1797-OB4D functions as an intrinsically safe (IS) digital output module within the FLEX Ex I/O platform. This module allows the control system to actuate field devices directly in hazardous areas (Class I, Division 1 or Zones 0/1) without the need for expensive explosion-proof enclosures or external safety barriers. Because it limits the electrical energy available to the field circuit, the 1797-OB4D prevents the ignition of flammable atmospheres while driving devices such as solenoid valves, small motor starters, and indicating lamps.

Furthermore, the module features four channels of non-isolated source outputs, each equipped with advanced diagnostics. It continuously monitors for fault conditions, including open wires and short circuits, and reports these statuses directly to the Logix5000 controller. Since the module supports “Removal and Insertion Under Power” (RIUP), technicians can replace units without disrupting the power to the rest of the I/O rack or declassifying the hazardous area. This capability significantly reduces maintenance-related downtime in continuous process environments.
