Product Description
The Triconex MP3101 serves as the computational heart of the Trident Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) safety system. This high-performance main processor drives the safety-critical logic of the entire controller by operating as one of three identical modules within a fault-tolerant triad. It actively manages the execution of control programs while simultaneously coordinating data flow between triplicated I/O modules and external communication networks.
Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) Architecture
The MP3101 implements the signature Triconex TMR architecture, where three independent processors work in parallel to achieve a Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL 3) rating. Each MP3101 module possesses its own memory and logic execution environment. The triad synchronizes at the beginning of every scan cycle to ensure that all three processors utilize the same input data and internal state variables.
Data Voting and TriBus Communication
A dedicated high-speed bus, known as TriBus, interconnects the three MP3101 modules to facilitate continuous data comparison and synchronization. The module employs specialized Direct Memory Access (DMA) hardware to perform majority voting on all input data and internal results. If a discrepancy occurs in one processor, the MP3101 triad uses the results of the other two healthy modules to mask the fault. This process ensures that the system maintains uninterrupted process control without compromising safety.
System Diagnostics and Fault Tolerance
The MP3101 performs extensive self-diagnostics to detect internal hardware or software anomalies immediately. It monitors the health of the I/O bus and communication links, reporting any detected faults to the operator through the TriStation engineering workstation. Because the module supports hot-swapping, maintenance personnel can replace a faulty main processor while the remaining two modules in the triad continue to control the process safely.
